Antonello da Messina

Antonello da Messina

Skira 2019
English translation of the exhibition catalogue by Scriptum

In an exceptional loan, sanctioned reluctantly by the Sicilian regional government, 19 masterpieces by the 15th-century Sicilian painter Antonello da Messina will be on view in Milan’s royal palace from 21 February. Antonello’s works have over the centuries been scattered across the western hemisphere, and many totally lost to the world through earthquakes, flooding and simple lack of appropriate care, while others have been restored with an unnaturally heavy hand. Apart from the paintings on loan from Palermo, others have been collected from museums and galleries in Florence, Piacenza, Rome, Venice, Turin, Bergamo, London, Sibiu in Romania, Philadelphia, Washington and Berlin to provide an exceptional treat for Milan’s art lovers.
