The magnificent Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento celebrates the centenary of its transformation into a museum with this exhibition, open from 6 July to 13 October 2024.
Albrecht Dürer visited Trentino in 1494-1495 and was fascinated by the landscapes and atmospheres and attracted by the artistic fervour of the principality, so much so that he captured the essence of those places in a series of watercolours.
The exhibition, curated by Bernard Aikema, Laura Dal Prà, Giovanni Maria Sara and Claudio Salsi, presents drawings, engravings, paintings and sculptures by Dürer and other artists of the time, analysing how his art influenced the development in Trentino of a unique Renaissance, characterised by a mix of styles and influences between Italy, Germany and Flanders. The role of figures such as the prince-bishop Bernardo Cles and Emperor Maximilian I is also explored, showing how the region was a cultural crossroads between the German and Italian worlds during a period of intense artistic and political transformation in Europe.
