At the Filatoio di Caraglio, in the province of Cuneo, a large anthological exhibition dedicated to Robert Doisneau, one of the most important masters of 20th-century photography, will be inaugurated. From 18 October 2024 to 23 February 2025, curated by Gabriel and Chantal Bauret, the exhibition traces Doisneau’s career through over 100 images from the collection of the Atelier Robert Doisneau. A unique opportunity to rediscover his fundamental role, alongside Cartier-Bresson, as the founder of French humanist photography and street photojournalism.
Through a selection of shots spanning half a century, the exhibition recounts everyday life and reveals the beauty hidden in everyday reality. Rebellious and poetic, Doisneau immortalises Liberation and post-war Paris, working-class neighbourhoods, children’s games, bistros and hard work in factories. A visual tale in perfect harmony with the spaces of the old silk factory that hosts the exhibition.
A never-before-seen selection of images from the 1945 reportage on the Aubusson factory documents for the first time the work of the craftsmen and the stages of tapestry production. Among the masterpieces on display is the iconic Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville from 1950, the famous portrait of a young couple kissing in front of Paris City Hall, oblivious to the hectic bustle of the city.
