Marc Chagall was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, and the range of his oeuvre’s themes is wider than the work of most of his contemporaries. Chagall was active in many artistic media: painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, mosaic, tapestry, and stage design. He was also highly articulate in his writings and in his poetry. His work can therefore be approached and displayed retrospectively from a great variety of angles.
This exhibition features some140 works by Marc Chagall, drawn from the Israel Museum’s extensive holdings of the artist’s oeuvre. The majority of the works were gifted by the artist, his daughter Ida, and friends of the Museum worldwide.
