The Scuderie del Quirinale presents Naples Nineteenth Century. Degas, Fortuny, Gemito, Mancini, Morelli, Palizzi, Sargent, Turner, a new large and unmissable exhibition, open until June 16 and curated by Sylvain Bellenger together with Jean-Loup Champion, Carmine Romano and Isabella Valente.

The exhibition pays homage to the Neapolitan nineteenth century, a period of considerable cultural and artistic richness not only in Italy, but throughout Europe. Beginning from the time of the Grand Tour to the outbreak of the First World War, this exhibition highlights how Naples was a crossroads of cultural influences. Artists from all over Europe and the United States were attracted to the city for its natural and archaeological beauties such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, the marine and mountain landscape, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the lively scenery of the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts.

The exhibition highlights the Neapolitan contribution to art with works by artists such as Ludwig Catel, William Turner, and John Singer Sargent, as well as many members of the Posillipo, Portici, and Resina schools, and figures such as Anton van Pitloo, Giuseppe De Nittis, and the Gigante brothers. Other notable artists represented include Mariano Fortuny, the Palizzi brothers, Domenico Morelli and, surprisingly, Edgar Degas of Neapolitan descent. Later figures such as Achille d’Orsi, Antonio Mancini and Vincenzo Gemito, up to Burri and Fontana, show the artistic evolution of the city.
